Road Atlanta has always been one of those legendary tracks you hear about and dream to drive. So it was a complete honor and gift to be able to Drift there.
We started out strong. During the first practice the judges were very pleased with our runs and said that we were one of the top three drivers of the day. Our confidence was up and the team was rocking and rolling going into the second practice. After the second practice we were ready to lay down a high qualifying run.
Now it was time to qualify. The first 13 cars lay down some pretty decent scores and then it started to rain. And I don’t mean a little rain, I mean torrential down pour. But being from Southern California, we’ve never driven before in pouring rain with little to no visibility. After watching 15 people in a row with no scores, it was our turn to run. We ended up driving to the best of our ability and still were not able to connect the track as the judges asked. So the first qualifying run was over we had to get our head straight for the second qualifying run. The track started to dry out but then right before our second run it started pouring rain again. We did the best we could to navigate through it,but we were not able to connect the track again giving us an incomplete run. This score put us to the list of the other 26 double zeros that were already set for the day, which also put us outside of top 16 for qualifying.
Knowing that the rain is one of the factors that holding us from winning. The next day the team and I decided that we are not going to be beat by the rain again. So we ended up going down to another track called Lanier. We practiced all day in the pouring rain trying different set ups. Adjusting the car different ways and trying different tire pressures until we finally figured out what the BMW needs to run effectively in the rain. Our next event is St. Louis and we can’t wait to rock this round!!!
